LORD GLENARTHUR'S TRAVEL

You and copy addressees may welcome an update on the perenially changing forward programme for Lord Glenarthur's travel. The following includes a number of points on which I should be grateful for comments.

2. All is set fair for the trip to Hong Kong and Thailand on 6-14 January.

3. As you know, the Secretary of State has not approved the proposed visit to the sub-Continent in February; I have so informed Delhi (but not other Posts who were consulted). Lord Glenarthur plans therefore to put off India and Pakistan until October; I shall shortly be putting down a firm marker to this effect with the Private Office.

4.

Rather than trying to cram a new visit into this slot, Lord Glenarthur proposes to bring forward slightly his planned visit to Australia and Fiji to the period 20 February-4 March. We are consulting Mr Furness about this, and will be bidding for it shortly.

5. The next proposed visit would be to Brunei (which Lord Glenarthur has never visited, and which has been shelved on three occasions so far, at the Post's suggestion) and Indonesia (not visited since September 1987). Subject to your views, I should be grateful if Mr Colvin could consult Posts on this and put together a possible itinerary for the period 4-15 April for Lord Glenarthur to consider in mid-January. There will be little flexibility in these dates, as Lord Glenarthur is committed on House of Lords' business on either side of this period.
