3. Lord Glenarthur emphasised that Sino-British Cooperation was going

well. Confidence in Hong Kong had to be maintained. M Barianı offered French support over Hong Kong and asked about direct elections.

4. M Barıanı said that the French approach was intended to be the most

acceptable to the most people. Its merits had already persuaded some

countries not to vote against France at the UN.

The two

The meeting was conducted at breakneck speed because the French

delegation arrived 20 minutes late, and lasted only 25 miutes.

Ministers agreed that it would be useful to keep in touch. At the start M Barianı, rather surprisingly, appeared to want to talk about the South Pacific. Lord Glenarthur (tactfully) referred to his various meetings

with M Flosse, and steered the conversation towards South East Asia.
