F. A number of large projects are under active consideration in Macao. The Administration are anxious that they should be started soon. Others may follow in the 12 years remaining before Macao becomes a Special Administrative Region of China. The main projects are an international airport; a deep water port; a second bridge between Macao and Taipa Island; and a low cost residential and commercial development on Taipa.

International Airport:

A plan for an airport between Taipa and Coloane islands was prepared in 1983 by the Franfurt Airport Group. The Group has been asked to revise the plan and to report to the Administration by March 1988. An investment company will be formed to include the Administration, the Society for Tourism and Development of Macao) (STDM have the gambling concession) and possibly some Chinese interests. The investment company will award a contract to build and equip the airport. If the Frankfurt Airport Group decides to compete for the construction contract there may be need for a replacement consultant. The Administration are hoping that the airport will be operational by 1993.

Deep Water Port:

This would be quite small and located near the airport. Although it is under serious study (and expressions of interest may be invited later in 1988) it is probably the least likely to go ahead.

There is a silting problem on the west of the Pearl River estuary. Constant dredging is necessary at the port of Zhuhai a few miles to the north. There is doubt about the need for a port in Macao; Zhuhai is under-used.
