Statutes of the All-China Lawyers' Asso-

ciation (Adopted by the All-China Lawyers' Congress, July 7, 1986)

Chapter 1 General Provisions

Article 1. The statutes are formulated in accordance with the provision of Article 19 of the Provisional Regulations Regarding Lawyers of the People's Republic of China.

Article 2. The All-China Lawyers' Association (hereafter referred to as the Associ- ation) is a national, non-governmental and social organization composed of lawyers of the People's Republic of China and is under the guidance of the Ministry of Justice of the People's Republic

of China.

Article 3. The purposes of the Associa- ation are to unite lawyers throughout the country, constantly improve the quality of law- yers, adhere to the four cardinal principles, correctly implement the Party's and state's guide- line and policy related to lawyers' work, whole- heartedly serve the people, ensure the faithful en- forcement of laws so as to develop socialist de- mocracy, improve the socialist legal system and promote various socialist modernization under- takings.

Article 4. The Association shall fulfil its functions as follows:

(1) to educate its members in political ideology and professional ethics, organize them to study our Party's and state's guideline and policy, state laws and relevant professional know- ledge;

(2) to sponsor and conduct professional research activities among lawyers, summarize and exchange professional experiences obtained in legal practices, run lawyers' newspaper and
