PRINCESS MARGARET'S VISIT TO CHINA: ORAL BRIEFING BY

SECRETARY OF STATE

1. Following a conversation in March with HRH

the Secrecary of State has kindly undertaken to call on Princess Margaret at 2.30 pm on Monday, 11 May to discuss her forthcoming visit to China. I submit Topics for Conversation which can be handed over to Princess Margaret, to supplement the confidential background briefing already provided through the usual channels. 2. The suggested Topics of Conversation for Princess Margaret to raise with her Chinese hosts follow on from the topics provided for the Queen last October. They have been drafted in the light of full advice from the Ambassador in Peking. We hope that Princess Margaret will feel able to take an active interest in China's current circumstances and policies, in particular expressing support for growing bilateral links, but equally we have tried to devise notes that obviate the risk of HRH being drawn into substantive comments on sensitive subjects such as Taiwan and human rights. The official banquet hosted by Vice Premier Li Peng, and the call on a top leader (as yet unidentified) should provide good opportunities to elicit authorative Chinese comment on Internal and External

developments.
