3. In setting the scene for Princess Margaret, the Secretary of State may wish to draw on the attached background notes (these too may be handed to

Princess Margaret as part of her supplementary briefing). Copies of the classified briefing already provided to Kensington Palace and of the draft programme for the visit are also attached, as is a copy of the unclassified Background Booklet which has been given to Princess Margaret. The Booklet updates a similar publication prepared for the State Visit. A new section on Art replaces the Flora and Fauna section (which had been prepared principally with Prince Philip in mind). In both the classified and unclassified briefing there. are guidance notes on Chinese customs including sections on the concept of "face" and the Chinese preference to avoid direct questions or direct rebuttal replies. 4. The classified briefing also contains personality notes on the Chinese hosts, and Embassy staff, whom we expect Princess Margaret to meet. The Embassy will provide additional personality notes on any other important Chinese personalities who may subsequently be notified to us as involved in the visit.
