Man beats Marknight IPA Airport)

The briefing took place on the TIN HAU motor vessel. The MV toured Hong Kong bay showing various aspects of port development underway plus the facilities.

Although there is increased growth expected the container facilities (9% per year for the next three years) a great deal of cargo is still lightered and then batched for container transit. Some containers are also lightered. Chinese port development could have a substantial effect on growth.

I was told by Mr Young that Phase 7 of the container terminal would go to ICB by March 88.

The Lantau project is exercising HK Govnt (HKG) minds. They are very unhappy about the new airport and particularly do not like Lantau as its base. However the port is receiving more agreeable attention but HKG prefer Stone cutter's island. for the base,

One point to consider on Mr Wu's development is where does the unfill come from for the man made structures?

-

My impression from the HK marine people is that they were caught flat footed and would have preferred coming up with at least the port idea on their own. However, if impetus gathers from Mr Wu's group it is possible that the port will get the nod, but not the airport. Depending on where the infill comes from which must be substantial, I feel property development will be the key to Mr Wu's success.
