ANNEX TO

ATTACHMENT TO CDS 7/87

1. The RN Hong Kong Squadron currently operates, inter alia, 5 purpose-built Peacock class patrol craft (PC). Although purchased for the HKG, who paid 75% of the cost (and under the DCA continue to pay 75% of the running costs) the craft remain the property of MOD(N), which has sole responsibility for their operation and maintenance. This is centred on HMS TAMAR where

all base and engineering support facilities are concentrated. If the PC were withdrawn for use elsewhere, we would have to

buy out the UKG's initial contri ution and the running eest6- would become the MOD's responsibility. The PC's present tasks

are:

Anti-illegal immigration.

Anti-smuggling.

Maintaining British sovereignty of Hong Kong waters against intrusion by PRC vessels.
