In the case of absentee owners, the entire payment will be made as soon as agreement is reached.

How are payments made?

Payments are normally effected by way of cheques drawn in favour of the party eligible for the payment. It is essential therefore that you should have a bank account for cashing the cheque.

What will happen to my compensation if possession of my premises is given to Government before agreement over the amount of my com- pensation is reached?

Under normal circumstances, a portion of the compensation based on Government's assessment would have been offered prior to Government obtaining possession of the premises. In the above case, interest will be paid on the value part of any outstanding amount of compensation.

Will I be paid for business loss and what if I cannot relocate my business?

Subject to eligibility (see pages 3, 4 and 10 of this pamphlet), compensa- tion for business loss will be assessed in accordance with the Rules of Assessment. Where it would not be reasonable to expect a business to relocate to an alternative location, the assessment will assume the basis of permanent extinguishment.

Under what circumstances can I approach Government for early surrender?

So as not to upset the overall clearance programme, application for ad- vance purchase will normally be rejected. However, Government would be prepared to give more sympathetic consideration to you if you can demonstrate that undue financial hardship will be caused should your ap- plication be rejected or your personal circumstances are such that, taking
