VIETNAMESE REFUGEES
(Impression of Hong Kong's concerns?)
Lively exchange of views. Sympathetic to Hong Kong
frustrations, but not an easy issue.
(UK resettlement record?)
UK has good record 13,000 Vietnamese refugees in past 12
years. Recent decision to accept further 468 over next two years.
Using this to encourage other countries to take more.
(Long term solution?)
Working with UNHCR and other resettlement countries to find lasting and permanent solution.
(Contacts with Vietnamese?)
In recent months intensified contacts with Vietnamese
recently explored possibility of repatriation on acceptable conditions. No sign of Vietnamese willingness to accept
repatriation except on case by case basis.

BN (0) PASSPORTS
(Reason for BN (0) passport?)
Passport reflects a new status of British national. That status introduced to ensure that people in Hong Kong can retain an appropriate form of British nationality when Hong Kong ceases to be
a British dependent territory.
(Problems with BN (0) passport?)
No government has said will not accept new passport. Have not heard of travellers encountering practical problems when using BN (0)
passports. Confident that the new passport will be as widely
accepted as any British passport.
