Australian Bi-Centennial Celebrations (Flying Events 8-16 Oct 88). No firm plans yet except participation in Ex FINCASTLE (Oct 88) by 2 Nimrods. Possible availability of route or schedule Hercules 'in theatre' (See Reference B).

5. In addition to the above, it is relevant that CAS Malaysia has proposed the mounting of a BERSATU PADU type exercise in Malaysia in 1988. Furthermore, the Sultan of Brunei, impressed by Ex SAIF SAREEA, has suggested that the UK consider mounting a similar exercise in conjunction with the RBAF. This is a proposal which raises problems for the UK as it could imply a greater degree of commitment than is wished.

6. Bearing the above factors in mind, the following proposal is offered for consideration:

Switch LANDEX to Malaysia in Sep 88 (Ex BERSATU PADU 88)?

Operate Global 88 between Malaysian Peninsula and East Malaysia as part of Ex STARFISH in Sep 88 before Australian Fleet Review. (Timing of this aspect is critical. It should drive all other timings to permit maximisation of effort).

Employ RAF assets in conjunction with Malaysian, Singaporean, RAAF F18As (deployed to Butterworth) and, possibly, Bruneian air assets.
