Expansion of the Baiyun Airport at Guangzhou is under way. On completion, the capacity will be increased to 8-10 million passengers સ year. Proposed airports in other cities would be of local significance. At present there are no definite plans for building an airport in

Zhuhai.

The study of the Baishizhcu site would take into

consideration environmental aspects.

The proposed site for the Baishizhou airport would be on

reclaimed lard at the north-western corner of Deep Bay.

The runway would follow an east-west aligrment. Planes

would overfly Futian, to the north of Lok Ma Chau.

Land Transport

6.5.1 Rail Transport is planned to be the largest carrier of

freight for internal transport.

The proposed East-West railway lines are mainly for opening up the interior and remcted area.

Rail freight containerisation is only in the very early stage of planning and is unlikely to be a major factor for consiceration in the year 2000.

6.5.4 After the completion of the double tracking of the Guangzhou and Shenzhen line, the freight carrying capacity would increase to 22m tonnes.

In 1986, cross border cargo by rail Was 2m: tornes.

However, no estimates of the increase after the double

tracking of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen line was given.
