5.1.7 Last year,
the total cargo throughput of Huangpu port
14.97m tonnes. It is expected that it would reach.
20m tonnes this year and 40m tonnes by the year 2000. The growth rate of 6% p.a. is likely to continue in the next few years. However, cautions should be taken when comparing the throughput figures of Huangpu port with
other ports because heavy loads such
as coals and iron
ores from northern provinces accounted for a large share
of the total throughput. Under the current policy of
"ore city one port", there are proposals to put
to put the
management of Guangzhou port and Huangpu port under one
authority.

Huangpu was very congested. It was also learnt that a
was being constructed and would be open to
traffic before the end of 87. The availability of this
alternative route should help to improve the traffic
conditions and thus, the flow of goods between Guangzhou
and the port.
