technology, helping the development of relatively

backward countries and villages, and continuing the

socialist material progress.

4.2.17 NY. Liu Jie (Director of Port Administration Office)

gave an overview of the development of the

transportation system. Cross-border traffic has

increased steadily and the cooperation of both governments in fulfilling the agreement on opening the

border channels (30 April 2)

62) has been

beer satisfactory.

The Chinese side of the joint inspection tover at Luohu

has been in operation since June 85 and the Hong Kong

side since January $7. Or a peak day, some 130,000

passengers cross the border at Luohu. It is expected

that after the double-tracking of the railway between

Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the number of cross-border

passengers will further increse.

4.2.18 The Wenjindu Crossing completed in February 1985 has

been

eavily used. Ir 1986,

the number of vehicles

crossing the border at this point amounted to 2.11n,

representing an average of 5,793/day. In the first 6

months of 1987, the rumber was recorded at 1.33m

vehicles, equivalent to 7,590 veh/cay passing through

the point, giving an increse of 45% as compared with the

same period cf last year.

The average number of

vehicles crossing the border at this point was recorded

as high as 9,000 veh./day in the last 3 months. A11

these statistics indicate that the capacity of the

bridge has become saturated. Roth governments have

agreed that future cross-border permits would orly be

issued to users of the Shataukok Crossing which is at

present used by about 730 veh./day.
