The percentage functional breakdown of the effort above
excludes the Residence servants. Their total numbers are,
however, included in the total LE numbers above. The
inclusion of the LE staff inevitably weights it towards
non-political work.
Other Staff
(II). We have two Service Attachés supported by two
UK-based staff and one L.E staff. An increasing amount of
their time is devoted to promoting defence sales. The
British Council have seven UK-based staff in Peking who are
integrated with the Embassy and twelve LE staff. Their main
job is to stimulate and support English language teaching in
China, to run academic, professional and student exchanges
including placing Chinese and British government-funded
post-graduates at British universities
