Watches

In a general article on various branches of German industry, the Süd Kurier, Donaueschingen, regional daily covering Southern Germany, emphasises the sorry state of the German watch industry due to the unfavourable exchange rate of the DM vis-à-vis the dollar and the pound Sterling. It also cites the stiff competition from the Far East, especially Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. In La Clessidra, a Rome-based monthly, a five-page supplement on the recent visit of an Italian commercial delegation to Hong Kong is highlighted. The delegation visited the Watch & Clock Fair which took place on 9-20 September. The trip was organised by the magazine, HKTDC and Cathay Pacific. The article pays great attention to style and quality.

Textiles

There is a lot of coverage in the European press of the Interstoff Asia textiles exhibition organised by Messe Frankfurt and HKTDC. This was not only covered by the specialised press (see extensive coverage in the German Textil-Wirtschaft magazine) but was also mentioned by the FAZ. In a detailed article on so-called "Third World Fashion", in specialist weekly Texpress, Amsterdam, Hong Kong is praised for "taking the long road from producer of cheap mass goods to high quality production". The same article also mentions in glowing terms the Hong Kong Fashion week which took place in Düsseldorf in January '87. Continuing the theme of Hong Kong fashion, the specialised French magazine Modes et Techniques highlights Hong Kong's fur trade. There is also a large feature in fortnightly business magazine, Trends (Brussels), on "Coca Cola Fashions" which has ten plants in Hong Kong.

Miscellaneous

In an article by frequent Hong Kong visitor Philippe Paquet in La Libre Belgique on a possible visit by the Pope to China in 1989, he quotes Louis Ha, Director of Catholic Social Communications Agency in Hong Kong who says that preparations are already underway and are in the hands of "a third country" which he declined to name.
