MEETING WITH LI KA-SHING

Thank you for your letter of 18 June. As I have explained to you on the telephone, this Department has no recollection of having expressed any reservations about a meeting between the Prime Minister and Mr Li Ka-Shing. I believe that it was, in fact, the Foreign Office which was in touch with you previously. The FCO have told us at official level that they see no reason at all why the Prime Minister and my Secretary of State (who has also been asked to meet Mr Li) should not agree to his request for a meeting.

I am copying this letter to William Fittall (PS/Home Secretary) and (with a copy of yours) to Tony Galsworthy (PS/Foreign Secretary).
