HONG KONG NATIONALITY ORDER IN COUNCIL
BRIEFING NOTES
2.
ENDORSEMENTS IN BN (0) PASSPORTS TO INDICATE THAT THE HOLDER DOES NOT REQUIRE VISA OR ENTRY CLEARANCE TO VISIT THE UNITED KINGDOM
WHAT HAS BEEN AGREED
The Government have agreed that the following endorsement should be placed in
each BN (0) passport.
"In accordance with the United Kingdom immigration rules the
holder of this passport does not require an entry certificate
or visa to visit the United Kingdom".
A leaflet will be given to each passport holder explaining that this is the
position under the current immigration rules.
We are glad to note UMELCO's view that this endorsement will greatly help to
ensure that third countries will accept the new passport.
2.
ENTRY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR BN (0)s
The endorsement reflects the position of BN (0)s under the current immigration
rules. The entry clearance requirements for BN (0)s will be precisely the same
as those currently applying to BDTCs. Those coming to this country for settlement or in a category leading to settlement (eg for marriage, for employment or business, or as persons of independent means) require prior entry clearance. Those coming for temporary purposes such as visitors or students do not require an entry clearance. But they may nevertheless obtain this in advance if they wish to ensure their admission before they set out.
There is no intention of imposing a visa requirement on BN (0) visitors to the
UK.
