A scheme of renunciation of triad membership
6
The papers generally supported the scheme as
it would assist triads to quit triad societies and
start a new life. Papers supporting this
constructive idea included Ming Pao Evening News, Tin
Tin Daily News, Wen Wei Po, Ming Pao, Centre Daily News and Ta Kung Pao. Other views expressed
included
-
(a)
sufficient police manpower should be
made available to protect the lives and
assets of people who have renounced
triad membership;
(b)
heavy punishment must be imposed if offenders are found to have rejoined
triad societies;
(c)
this should be a "one-off" exercise and
there should not be a regular
(a)
opportunity for renunciation; and
rehabilitation of offenders, including
finding jobs for them, was important
after renunciation.
Compulsory attendance of suspects
at identification parades
7
The press mostly reported District Board
views on this matter. Centre Daily News supported this option if parades could be conducted in absolutely fair conditions.
