Supplementary aid
6.4.14 The substantial reduction of the allocation approved for 1986 has been possible in view of the decreased expenditure for medical costs for individual Afghan refugees, who now benefit from free treatment in public clinics and hospitals. The allocation proposed for 1987 takes account of this arrangement, and is limited to temporary assistance to vulnerable groups.
Special Programmes
Other trust funds
6.4.15 In 1985, $ 2.6 million were recorded for food donations including rice and wheat from the EEC and the Federal Republic of Germany. During 1986, donations of wheat, oil and sugar totalling $ 3.1 million have been obtained as of 15 September from the EEC, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
6.4.16 In 1986, the Government of Switzerland provided eight emergency health posts which were erected near the Afghan border in the provinces of Khorasan and Sistan-Baluchistan. These will provide medical screening and first aid treatment for newly-arrived refugees.
Programme Support and Administration
6.4.17 Programme support and administration costs have been relatively stable in 1985 and 1986. For 1987, it is proposed that two General Service posts be established through redeployment, thus increasing the staff costs. As of May 1986, there were eight General Service posts under the project personnel category.
