OBJECTIVES

To offer an activity/leisure

programme in parallel with the educational objectives. To encourage positive social

interaction with peers and others. To stimulate leisure interests and

activities.

To encourage adults to begin to

develop the communication skills they will need in a new country. To begin to instruct adults in

some of the skills they will need in the West, e.g. use of money, transport, health facilities etc.

To offer a working experience

modelled on the kind of experience refugees are likely to find in the West; e.g. workshop/ clocking on and off etc.

See also family objectives. To offer mutual support and some

guidelines for problem resolution.

To offer support, guidance to

refugees under stress and with personal problems.

Group activity to enable refugees

to explore ways of coping in their new environment and enable discussion of fears and expectation of new life.

PERSONNEL/TIME NEEDED

Volunteers from outside to help with specific groups/interests, e.g. sewing, knitting, etc. plumbing, electrical. 3 evenings/week/3 hours.

English teachers

preferably native English with TEFL qualifications.
