Background Brief- Refugees from Indochina
I
Would you please refer to Stephen Nash's minute to me of 10 June 1986. now attach a draft of a background brief on Refugees from Indochina and should be grateful for your comments and clearance.
The draft has been seen by Research Department and one of their two suggested amendments is shown (in red) on page 6. The other suggested amendment is that the sentence at the top of page 2 ("The British Government
has
.......to ease Hong Kong's burden.") be amended or deleted since it gives the impression that HMG is "trying to get others to pull its own chestnuts out of the fire." We in Information Dept, however, feel that the sentence should remain as it stands. Would SEAD and HKD please give their views.
Jack Forsdike (Deputy Editor, Briefwriting Section) has, I understand, discussed the draft on the telephone a week or so ago with a lady member of SEAD who undertook to update or amend as necessary the numerical statistics. These are underlined in red on SEAD's copy.
I leave Information Dept on transfer today. I should be grateful if you would liaise on the brief with Mr. Fors dike, OAB G/96 (210 6134)
