Thank you for your letter of 7 February giving

the views of the Asia Committee of the British

Refugee Council on the Government's Reply to the

Home Affairs Committee's Report entitled "Refugees and Asylum, with Special Reference to the

Vietnamese".

I was pleased to learn that the BRC welcome

the decision to relax the criteria for family

reunion in respect of Vietnamese refugees already in

camps in places of first asylum, mostly in Hong Kong. As you will know FCO, Home Office and Hong Kong Government officials are in close contact with

the BRC, the Ockenden Venture and Refugee Action to

try to ensure that we are able to maintain a

resettlement rate of about 40 family reunion cases

from Hong Kong each month.
