Thank you for your letter of 7 February giving
the views of the Asia Committee of the British
Refugee Council on the Government's Reply to the
Home Affairs Committee's Report entitled "Refugees and Asylum, with Special Reference to the
Vietnamese".
I was pleased to learn that the BRC welcome
the decision to relax the criteria for family
reunion in respect of Vietnamese refugees already in
camps in places of first asylum, mostly in Hong Kong. As you will know FCO, Home Office and Hong Kong Government officials are in close contact with
the BRC, the Ockenden Venture and Refugee Action to
try to ensure that we are able to maintain a
resettlement rate of about 40 family reunion cases
from Hong Kong each month.
