7. The session heard a report from the Minister of Nuclear Industry, Jiang Xinxiong, on the principles guiding the construction and development of China's nuclear power stations. The purpose of China's 'measured and appropriate' development of nuclear energy at this stage was to absorb advanced world technology rather than to supply electricity. Two pressurised water reactors were being built at Daya Bay and at Qinshan. Chinese specialists were confident of their design's safety standards which were widely accepted in the world. China would concentrate mainly on coal and hydroelectric power.
