non-participants on the progress of

negotiations.

Hints that non-aligned LDCs might press for

South Africa's exclusion from the new round did

not materalise: despite some aggressive talk

along these lines at the beginning of the

Ministerial from Nigeria and Jamaica, the LDCs

came to realise that it would be impossible for

them to achieve this without wrecking the

conference.

JAPAN

The EC obtained a separate statement by Iglesias,

the Chairman of the Conference, to which Japan

reluctantly agreed in advance, acknowledging the

necessity of broadly-based action to remove the major

disequilibria in the world economy, and the need for

these to be tackled by various policy means, including

macro-economic policy, exchange rates, structural

reform and trade policy. This statement will help to

maintain pressure on Japan to increase its imports.
