Alcoholic

drinks and tobacco, and clothing and footwear

recorded the most significant rates of price increase in

Consumer Price Index (A) during the first half, at 5% and 4%

respectively (7). They together accounted for 19% of the

overall increase in the Consumer Price Index (A), with another 55% contributed by the foodstuffs component by virtue of its large weighting in the overall index. During the same period, the equivalent proportion accounted for by the former two components was 20% for the Consumer Price Index (B) and 9% for

(8) the Hang Seng Consumer Price Index

(7) Price movements of different components of goods and services may vary among the three consumer price indices, because different items of goods and services are selected even for the same component. For Consumer Price Index (B), the most significant rates of price increase during the first half of 1986 were also recorded for clothing and footwear, and alcoholic drinks and tobacco, both at 5%. However, for the Hang Seng Consumer Price Index, housing and durable goods recorded the most rapid price increases during the same period, at 6% and 5% respectively.
