Thank you for your letter of 11 February to

Geoffrey Howe about your recent visit to Peking and

Hong Kong. I am replying, as the FCO Minister with

direct responsibility for the Far East.

I am delighted but not surprised that the

conference in China proved such a success.

Contacts

between Britain and China in the field of care for

the disabled are developing rapidly. We welcome this,

. both for the scope which clearly exists for mutually

beneficial cooperation and for the contribution this

makes to the overall expansion of bilateral exchanges.

One flourishing example is the contact between the

Sino-British Group on Rehabilitation, of which

Sir Geoffrey Howe is a patron, and The China Welfare

Fund for the Handicapped.

I am glad we and the Embassy in Peking were able

to be of assistance to you. I shall certainly pass on

your kind words to Sir Richard Evans. And I should

be pleased to meet you to discuss how to build on your

/visit
