FAMILIARISATION VISIT TO THE FCO BY MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT
1
•
Two questions arose during the visit to the Office today by a group of Conservative MPs which require follow up action:
(a) Sir Trevor Skeet asked about the nationality
implications of the Hong Kong Agreement, in particular for the non-Chinese. Mr Eggar promised to write to him setting out the current position. I should be grateful if HKD would submit a draft. Mr James Couchman would like to receive a copy of the letter, together with any other readily available background material on current Hong Kong issues;
(b)
Mr William Cash said he had been struck during a recent visit to Luxembourg as a member of the House of Commons Scrutiny Committee by the impact on the UK of the extension of the use of majority voting. He was very concerned about this. He also thought that UKREP's role in indentifying potential political problems in the working groups was important. The discussion on this subject was rather inconclusive and the PUS asked after the meeting that someone should telephone Mr Cash with a view to clarifying his difficulties and reassuring him about the effects of majority voting. I should be grateful if ECD (I) would take this on.
