Mr Norman llogg, MP Deputy Chief Whip House of Commons Westminster London SW1A OAA

21 May 1986

Recently Dr Stuart Holland, Opposition Spokesman for Overseas Development, visited China. On 9 April, the Hong Kong Government received notice from the Chinese authorities at the border in Shenzhen that Dr Holland would arrive in Hong Kong on 10 April and stay until the 12th. We were requested to arrange accommodation and transport for Dr Holland and a courtesy call on His Excellency the Governor. This we did with a brief programme. There was then some difficulty with

Dr Holland over his accommodation and he pressed that his expenses be covered. In the event, we agreed to pay part of his costs.

As you know, the Hong Kong Government welcomes MPs to visit the territory, but on this occasion the notice was very short. Had we known earlier, we might have obviated some of the difficulties raised by Dr Holland.

If any of your colleagues are visiting Hong Kong or stopping over during the summer recess, please let me know and we shall be delighted to do what we can for them.

With warm regards,

CHH/Tl
