J. Thomas 13/.
The Department's Exports Steering Group met recently and discussed a possible
programme of export-related overseas visits by Transport Ministers next year.
I have been asked to consult you and FCO on a number of proposals, with a view
to making a submission to our Ministers next week. This will enable us to
prepare an outline programme in time to meet EX(0) Secretariat's deadline of
27 November.
EUROPE
2. (a) Hungary. We are considering a visit by David Mitchell, Minister of State,
early in the New Year. This would be to return visits to the UK made by Hungarian
Ministers of Transport, to provide Ministerial impetus for a recently negotiated
programme of co-operation under the auspices of the Memorandum of Understanding between this Department and the Hungarian Ministry of Transport, and to support the export interests of firms such as Transmark, British Aerospace and Hovermarine
International. We have already sounded DTI/OT3 and FCO/EED, who have indicated their
support. The industries concerned have said that an early visit would be useful. We have in mind a possible visit in January.
(b) USSR. We floated the possibility of a visit earlier this year, which was
supported by DTI in view of potential business on the Moscow-Leningrad line and possible local manufacture of BAe's Advanced Turbo-Prop aircraft. Unfortunately,
we were unable to include it in the final programme agreed with Ministers. Would a visit in 1987 be useful?
