MR RENTON'S MEETING WITH THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG:

4.30 PM 24 JULY 1986

I submit points to make for Mr Renton's meeting with

the Governor of Hong Kong this afternoon.

2.

As agreed with you, I have kept the briefing short and

omitted background. In view of the very heavy burden of

work connected with the Joint Liaison Group (our

secretaries worked a 14 hour day yesterday) I feel I must invoke the "long hours" dispensation.

3.

If it would help for this briefing to be supplemented orally, could I suggest that Mr Layden or I (whichever is less caught up in JLG business) stands ready to brief the

Minister at 4.00 o'clock this afternoon.
