We have been asked to forward the enclosed message

of thanks to the Prime Minister from Mr Hu Yaobang on

his departure from Heathrow on 12 June.

Enclosures-flag(s).........

Mr. Hu Yaobang himself made a point of saying twice to

Mr Renton, who was at the airport for the departure, that

he wished the Prime Minister to know how much he had

enjoyed his visit and how very grateful he was to the

Prime Minister.

It is particularly heartening to have these express

of evident pleasure in view of the two mishaps at Heathr

involving the Chinese aircraft. The first, involving a

service vehicle, only amounted to a minor scratch. The

second, the unauthorised entering of the aircraft in ord

to facilitate its preparation for a test flight, was a

mistake made in good faith to try to speed things along

are being

for the Chinese. Apologies have been sent to the Chines

who seemed to have been pleased with the way in which th

Metropolitan Police carried out the search of the aircra

that the Chinese had requested.
