VISIT OF GENERAL SECRETARY HU YAOBANG

1. The Chinese Embassy have asked us to forward a message of thanks to the Prime Minister from Mr Hu Yaobang. This re-inforces the twice expressed thanks offered by Mr Hu to Mr Renton at the airport this morning.

2. I understand that Mr Hu also asked that his personal thanks and good wishes should be passed on to Sir Geoffrey Howe together with Mr Hu's regret that on this occasion there had not been much time to talk together. I believe he looks forward to a good chat when the Secretary of State is in China with the Queen in October.

3. I submit a draft letter to No 10 passing on the Chinese thanks and, I hope, concluding the story of mishaps at the airport involving the Chinese plane.
