Geoffrey I would like to thank you for your time to give

us this interview and our first question is:

to visit Britain after Premier You's visit last year. What significance do you see in this visit?

Well, the visit is evidence of the growing strength of the relationship between our two countries. It's one of many such

Your Prime Minister Zhao was here last year and Her Majesty The Queen will be coming to China this autumn and I think it's evidence of the stengthening of all the bonds between us particularly since the signing of the joint declaration on Hong Kong in December 1984.

How do you evaluate the relationship between China and Britain? The two countries are so different in both social systems and

economic systems.

A. I think that relations have never been better, they are

extremely good and I think there is a spontaneous quality about them which we shouldn't underestimate. Of course, they are different countries with different cultural and historical back- grounds but the fact that we are both countries with a long history with a long experience, with a certain pride, if you like in our tradition and our position, it enables us to under- stand each other better. I can remember when I was in Peking on one of my visits in connection with the Hong Kong negotiations, one of my opposite numbers of the Chinese Foreign Minister there pointing out to me a candelabra on the table at which we were banqueting and I said "How old was it?" and he said "it's not more than 300 years old".
