Mr Newton at the DHSS.

3. Sra Aguiar said that she was keen to make the Portuguese in the UK more aware of their new rights as EC nationals. It would be helpful if the British authorities could check a publication currently being prepared in Lisbon setting out these rights, for distribution to the local Portuguese Community in the UK. Mrs Chalker said that we would be glad to help. Perhaps bodies like the Anglo-Portuguese Association might help as well?

4. Sra Aguiar said that her responsibilities in the Community

centred mainly on France where there were about 500,000

Portuguese migrant workers (more than a million Portuguese

nationals including their families). All told, there were approximately 1.2 million Portuguese in the Community outside

Portugal.
