In the second quarter of 1986, 2.8 million trips

were made by Hong Kong residents to China, representing an

increase of 6% over the same quarter last year. In

addition, 173,436 trips were made by foreign visitors to

China through Hong Kong. In the other direction, the number of trips made by Chinese residents to Hong Kong

rose by 31% over this period to 32,437. Of these, 51%

were in the form of group tours, while the rest were made

by two way permit holders.

According to a report compiled by the

Immigration Department, a total of 1,250 separate PRC

official delegations, comprising 5,086 people, visited

Hong Kong in the second quarter of 1986, compared with

1,240 delegations comprising 4,767 people in the first

quarter of 1986. At the end of June 1986, there were 4,606 PRC officials working in Hong Kong, compared with

4,297 at the end of March 1986.

(a) Hong Kong's investment in China

Reflecting the measures taken by China to solve

its foreign exchange problems, the inflow of foreign

investment into China slowed down in recent months. The

volume of direct foreign investment pledged in the first

half of 1986 amounted to US$1.24 billion, 20% less than in

the same period last year. Recently, in response to the intensification of complaints by foreign investors, China

has made some attempts to improve the investment environment for foreign enterprises operating in the country. A foreign cooperation and co-ordination centre was set up by the State Economic Commission to help Sino-foreign joint ventures to solve their business
