About 60% of the goods imported from China in the second quarter of 1986 were subsequently re-exported elsewhere. Re-exports of China origin through Hong Kong to the rest of the world accounted for 41% of Hong Kong's

total re-exports.

Analysed by products, imports from China of telecommunication, sound recording and reproducing

apparatus, vegetables and fruit, clothing, textile yarn

and fabrics, and travel goods and handbags all recorded substantial increases in money terms in the second quarter

of 1986.

The decline in total exports to China (as the

fall in re-exports offset the slight increase in domestic

exports), coupled with a substantial increase in imports

from China, resulted in a visible trade deficit of

HK$5,774 million with China in the second quarter of

1986. For the first half as a whole, the visible trade

deficit with China stood at HK$9,914 million.
