with the Director of Management and Inspection Services. The results reported or the action proposed against the subject Police Officer(s) in 137 cases were modified. Further reports were sought in respect of 60 cases. In addition, 10 cases were referred to the Attorney General's Chambers for examination or re- examination, on the instructions of the Attorney General.

UMELCO Visits

UMELCO Members continued their annual programme of regular visits to various districts in the urban area and in the New Territories to keep in touch, not only with new developments, but also with the problems, views and aspirations of the district communities. Informal

discussions with local representatives are an important feature of these visits.

Points raised either by the representatives or the Members themselves are recorded and referred to the Chief Secretary for comment, and recommendations are added by the Members as appropriate. These reports and the Chief Secretary's comments are later circulated to all Members, so that those who did not participate in a particular visit may be kept informed of territory-wide problems and developments.

Visits cover both Government departments and private institutions, and during the year under review a total of 11 such visits were made. These were:-

Mongkok District Visited on 12.11.84 To see the progress of traffic and municipal projects in the district, including Stage Three of the West Kowloon Corridor and the Hong Kong-China Ferry Terminus at Tai Kok Tsui; receive a briefing on the plan to build a 14-storey market complex at Fa Yuen Street; and discuss local problems with District Board members.

Southern District Visited on 26.11.84 To be briefed on the Telegraph Bay reclamation and its future land use proposals which have received objections from Baguio Villa residents; see squatter improvement projects at Nam Fung Sheung Village; watch operation of mobile food vans in Wong Chuk Hang industrial area; look at Aberdeen reclamation where a coastal highway will be built; and meet with District Board members to

discuss local affairs.

Yaumatei District Visited on 10.12.84 To be briefed on conditions in the Yau Ma Tei typhoon shelter; inspect operation of jade hawkers in Kansu Street; see some of the district's street- sleepers; tour Chung King Mansion to inspect environmental improvements made by the Owners' Incorporation; and tour Tsim Sha Tsui East to look at the development of the area.

Civil Aviation Department Visited on 24.12.84

To be updated on the latest developments in air-traffic and planned improvements to airport facilities to cope with increased demands; tour and see the operation of the Air Traffic Control Centre, the Control Tower, the Terminal Building and the Aircraft Parking Apron.

Sai Kung District Visited on 14.1.85 To examine the problem of floating rubbish at Chung Mei Tuk which has been caused by boat people; tour the Chong Hing Water Sports Centre; receive a briefing on the progress of developments at Junk Bay; visit the Tui Min Hoi Rural Public Housing Estate; and discuss local issues with District Board members.

Tuen Mun District Visited on 28.1.85

To be briefed on the latest developments in the New Town; discuss with officer-in-charge problems on the provision of schools

in the district; visit a zipper factory;
