the "one country, two systems" in Taiwan.

Changes in Hong Kong will

stimulate changes in Taiwan. At present, there is no democracy in Taiwan. So people's requests for three channels of communications are being suppressed. If in future, the wave of democracy makes an impact on Taiwan, then it will not be up to one or two persons to influence the direction towards which Taiwan goes. At present, Taiwan actively promotes democracy in Hong Kong. If in future the Taiwan authorities do not allow the practice of democracy there, will not our compatriots in Taiwan demand democracy from the Nationalist

Agreement?

Discussions on the Basic Law will start in Hong Kong and will be

integrated more and more with democratization.

Those people who have all along proclaimed that the "one country two systems" concept can never be successful and even those who have "boycotted" discussions on the Basic Law by various means will have their eyes on the Basic Law from now on and will express their views through direct or indirect

On ways because it is the Basic Law that will decide Hong Kong's future. this, no one can deny or adopt the ostrich policy. The arguments at an earlier stage only demonstrate that a handful of people dream of using the development of representative government to replace the Basic Law, and provisions in the Sino-British Agreement they have wanted to be written down but are not there. During a dinner party, someone has said that the representative government is a most important part of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, (looking thoroughly through the Agreement, no such a term can be found) but omitted to mention the Basic Law. Obviously "the drinker's heart is not in the cup". But when they are sober, these people still have to face squarely the Sino-British Agreement and accept the provision in the Agreement that the Basic Law will decide Hong Kong's future political structure.

Somebody has likened Hong Kong to a pot. Various sectors want to

If it is broken, get advantage out of the pot which must not be broken.
