(FCO Minister Timothy Renton): The British and Chinese Governments had agreed on the need for convergence between the political system evolving in HK and the system to be laid down in the Basic Law. Both had no

preconceived ideas on the elections in HK.

Non-communist Papers

(Hung Kwan-man, writing in HK Economic Journal): He disagreed with Ming Pao that the Communists were bound to secure most votes if direct elections were introduced to HK.

BLCC member Louis Cha: In their meeting with Lu Ping that day, most of the BLCC members from labour sector supported direct elections, but not those from the business sector. Most of the BLCC members agreed that reforms should be gradual.

BLCC member Poon-Kwok-shing: He suggested to Lu Ping that the part of the Basic Law concerning the SAR political system should be made public before the 1987 review.

BLCC member Peter C.K. Chan: The circumstances under which the SAR

chief executive could be dismissed must be

specified clearly in the Basic Law.
