SECRETARY OF STATE ON 9 JUNE : STATE VISIT
Points to Make
1.
Much thought has gone into ideas for the main elements
of the State Visit. The outline is beginning to take shape.
It seems clear that the Queen will go to Shanghai (where the Royal Yacht will be berthed) and two or three other cities.
in China.
2.
The Ambassador will be going through more detailed ideas
with Buckingham Palace after Hu Yaobang's visit.
3. Next month a reconnaissance party from Buckingham Palace will go out to China to discuss the details with the Chinese
and examine possibilities in the various cities. At present
plans are therefore rather fluid and subject to change.
4. [Perhaps the key point to make at this stage is that the
Chinese will be the hosts for the Visit as a whole and for
nearly all the main occasions during the Visit. However,
note Sir Y K Pao's keen interest and have no doubt that he
will be invited to attend a function during the State Visit.
