MR DENNIS CANAVAN (FALKIRK WEST): TO ASK THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS, WHETHER HE WILL MAKE

A STATEMENT ABOUT THE TREATMENT OF REFUGEES IN HONG KONG.

to

Sir Geoffry Howe

Under the provisions of the Hong Kong Immigration Ordinance,

all Vietnamese refugees arriving in Hong Kong are permitted

remain in the territory pending their resettlement

elsewhere. During their stay they are accommodated in closed

the centres run by the Hong Kong Government in cooperation with

UNHCR, or,

if they arrived before 2 July 1982, in open centres

run by UNHCR. Both HMG and the Hong Kong authorities are

making every effort, in consultation with UNHCR, to secure

a durable solution for all those still in the camps.
