Canada

UNHCR will be writing to the Canadian Government in 1986 (possibly in February or March) and are hoping for a repetition of the 1985 total intake from Hong Kong of 1000.

Ireland

16. UNHCR do not think there is much hope here and, in spite of Mr von Arnim's views, think it is not worth pressing Ireland any further.

Spain, Portugal and Greece

17. UNHCR consider that these three countries are non-starters.

Belgium

UNHCR are not very hopeful but will talk again to the Belgians.

Austria

19. UNHCR have nothing to add. The Austrian Government are currently considering the eight family reunion cases.

Switzerland

20. UNHCR think Switzerland might be inclined to give a small quota, maybe family reunion cases. UNHCR will approach the Swiss Government.

Luxembourg

The Luxembourg Government have said they may be able to take refugees "that would be employable" UNHCR are making further enquiries.

Tanzania

22. UNHCR had no information.

Italy

23. The Italian Government have already told UNHCR that they cannot help.

Australia

24. The initial offer of 400 was increased to 600 and, depending on Hong Kong's action on local integration, could be increased to 800.

France
