Australia 200 to 400 extra places Mr Hurford, Australian
Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, announced on 17
October (in answer to a PQ) that in response to HMG's
request, Australia's off take of refugees from Hong Kong
between now and 30 June 1986 will be increased from 400 to
600, and possibly to 800.

The Americans have in principle welcomed our decision to
admit the 500 family reunion cases. Ambassador Douglas (former Special Coordinator for Refugee Affairs) initially said he would explore with the Administration whether they
could come up with a "quick
"quick gesture" of support to give a
boost to our diplomatic effort. However this has failed to
materialise and Ambassador Douglas has now left the Administration. It now seems that a decision may be deferred
until the Administration's newly established "Indo-Chinese
Refugee Panel" has undertaken its proposed review of the
