VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG: RESPONSE BY HMG TO REPORT OF

HOME AFFAIRS SUB-COMMITTEE ON RACE RELATIONS AND IMMIGRATION

INTRODUCTION

1. On 26 September the Government will publish a White Paper in

response to SCORRI's recent report "Refugees and Asylum with Special Reference to the Vietnamese", part one of which was devoted to the problem of Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong. (The other two parts covered the problems of the Vietnamese in

Britain, and UK Asylum procedures.) The White Paper will announce Snext two words underline) inter alia HMG's agreement, in accordance with SCORRI's recommendation, to accept for resettlement in the UK some 500 Vietnamese refugees, mainly from Hong Kong, who have relatives in the UK, but who have hitherto fallen outside the Home Office's immigration criteria for family reunion; and in addition, depending on the willingness shown by other resettlement countries to respond to Hong Kong's needs, to consider accepting further limited numbers from Hong Kong.
