Are we

right in assuming

assuming that Home Office will aim to publish a White

Paper, to which we will contribute?

2. To impress upon the Home Office the desirability of a quick response to report.

We would Like to reply within the conventional 2 month deadline. If the Home Office cannot manage this, we are likely to come under pressure to make an interim (eg inspired PQ). I t will be difficult to make a substance unless the Home Office have reached a recommendations concerning Hong Kong matters for are responsible. What timescale do Home Office

statement

statement of any decision on

which they

envisage for responding?

3. To press Home Office to accept more than the 500 family reunion cases mentioned in the report.

We consider that a continuing commitment is necessary if we are to persuade other countries to do more for Hong Kong. We should press for either regular intake of say 500 a year, with the number of years to be determined in the light of Hong Kong's circumstances, or a fixed number, eg 2500, to be spread over say 4 or 5 years.

*

4. To seek Home Office views on the idea of using RPC Bataan for refugees who have been accepted by

by the UK. Indicate possible advantages to Home Office:

a) reduce assimilation problems before arrival on UK soil?

Lower medical, teaching, and other costs?
