Furzner to my letter of 7 December on the above subject, I enclose, as requested, a Appendix I statistics on Vietnamese refugees remaining in hong Nong.

There are only 3 resettlement countries now taking refugees from Hong Kong on a regular basis - USA, Canada and Australia. Appendix I shows the admission criteria of these countries.

Eltgibility for overseas

esetlemen: depends

on the circumstances of rhe individual refugee, and those in open centres are not accordeded priority for resettlement over thell counterparts in closed centres by the resettlement countries, though we' wish they were.

are rejected by a leas 00: sele- ent country. However, tae Hong Kong Gove Rent and the UNHCR are now, to Ine very limited excent possible, pushing the cases in Jubilee upon env résecclement country chat will listen simply because in the past 25 years the ubilee residen have fared worse in resec¡lement Lenas Chan ei her their closed centre counterparts or even chose in the Kai Tak open centre. (inese in Kat Tan cure relatively less badly because they are nostly ethnic Chinese, and thus, fall into a special cateroty under the current US criteria.}
