I
1. Thank you for the copy of your letter (89) in IMM/ CR 1113 of 28 May addressed to Robert Miller in MVD. am sorry to say I cannot send you a copy of the French Consulate General letter of 10 August 1983. When I not- iced a reference to it a little earlier this year, I recognised that a copy could be useful and hunted for it, but in vain.
2.
Among the enclosures to your letter, however, is a copy of another French Consulate General letter, dated 13 December 1984. It, too, confirms that holders of Hong Kong British passports do not need a visa for a stay of under 3 months. The reason I am pleased to have it handy is that we occasionally get a telephone call from the airport about some difficulty or doubt over admitting a BDTC of Hong Kong. Time is short on such occasions and it is good to have and to be able to quote a French authority as confirming that a visa is not necessary for short visits.
3. We recognise, naturally, that non-visa nationals do not have a right of entry to France, and need to be able to satisfy the immigration officer as to the purpose of their visit, the adequacy of their means etc.
