U.S. CONSULATE TO ISSUE "INDEFINITE"

VALIDITY TOURIST AND BUSINESS VISAS

The U.S. Consulate General has received authorization from the Department of

State to issue "indefinite" validity nonimmigrant B-1 (temporary visitor for business) and B-2 (temporary visitor for pleasure) visas to bearers of Hong Kong British passports and Certificates of Identity. "Indefinite" validity means that the visa is

valid as long as the travel document containing it is valid.

Indefinite validity visas will be issued to persons who appear to have reasonable

long-term travel needs, and who are likely to maintain their status as nonimmigrant

travelers.

Authorization to issue indefinite validity visas is based on the recognition of

reciprocity in U.S. visa law. Hong Kong does not require visas for American visitors who plan to remain in the territory less than 30 days. The United States requires

visas of all nationalities except Canadians, but authorizes indefinite validity

business and tourist visas for various nationals whose countries and territories do not

require visas of Americans.
